En Memoria speaks on a very personal level to the roots of Eddie Ramirez’ homeland, Puerto Rico. Painted while in prison, this graffiti-style artwork commemorates Puerto Rico's Independence Day, celebrated on September 23, 1868. The artwork honors the armed rebellion led by Puerto Rico's pro-independence movement, sparked by deep frustrations over the lack of political and economic freedom, while also highlighting the ongoing repression of the island’s indigenous population. The struggles his people faced over 150 years ago is eerily reminiscent of the profoundly complex and painful circumstances of the artist’s life as a wrongfully incarcerated prisoner. This artwork, rich in symbolism, serves as a tribute to the great tribal leaders who risked their lives in the fight for freedom, reflecting both their courage and the artist’s personal battle for justice.
