“The Weight Of Memories is a look into how I have dealt with being incarcerated for the past 36 years and having to live vicariously through the lives of family, friends and loved ones only to have those memories fall into the depths of my despair.”

Charles H. Lawson, also known as Zafir, is a self-taught artist born in Philadelphia in 1957 who is currently serving a life sentence. Lawson’s artistic practice inspires young people to recognize and develop their talents as a means of overcoming peer pressure and avoiding destructive paths such as violence, substance abuse, and crime. Through his work, he encourages individuals to take ownership of their inner potential and to use creative expression as a force for personal growth and social change. Lawson’s work seeks to reveal the beauty, integrity, and humanity that must be acknowledged and restored within society.
