"I'm Sorry I Wasn't There is a telling of my deepest fear which almost came to life of losing my mother before I got back home. She got really sick and ended up in hospice care a few years ago. Thankfully she found the strength to get better and has made a complete recovery, but that fear stays with me to this day. This unfortunately is something many incarcerated go through and have experienced.”
Albert Perez, who signs his work as “Tank,” was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. He was introduced to art at a young age and as he grew older, he developed a passion for comic books, initially copying his favorite heroes before teaching himself to draw freehand and invent original characters. For the past 17 years, Perez has been incarcerated while fighting a wrongful conviction, including 10 years in solitary confinement. Throughout this time, art has been a vital source of resilience and escape, allowing him to mentally transcend his circumstances through vivid scenes of dragons, aliens, and heroic fantasy.
