Jon Davenport is a contemporary mixed-media artist whose work reimagines the polished visual language of 1950s advertising. Drawing on an era defined by optimism, glamour, and carefully constructed ideals, he transforms familiar imagery into layered compositions that reveal the tension beneath the surface. By introducing texture, distortion, and visual noise, Davenport shifts these images away from their original commercial purpose and gives them a more complex, psychological presence.

After spending years working in advertising, Davenport became deeply familiar with how images are designed to persuade, attract, and shape desire. His work reverses that process. Using fragments from vintage magazines, mid-century advertisements, and ephemera collected during his travels, he builds each painting through layers of collage, paint, gel medium, and poured washes. Accidents, drips, and unexpected interactions between materials remain an essential part of the finished work.

Influenced by artists and illustrators including Andy Warhol, Gil Elvgren, and Alberto Vargas, Davenport is interested in the space between beauty and deterioration, control and chaos. His paintings strip away the certainty of commercial imagery, allowing cracks, interruptions, and imperfections to emerge. What once existed to sell an ideal becomes something more reflective, ambiguous, and human.
