Eduardo Cabrer

Eduardo Cabrer, who grew up in Santurce, Puerto Rico, processes both Latin and American cultures through imagery that carries the viewer back to earlier memories of childhood. As a form of commentary on cultural recognition, ubiquity, and community, Cabrer elevates popular culture and symbols to the level of contemporary fine art. For example, the artist paints minimalist retro candies such as Life Savers, Bazooka Bubble Gum, and Blow Pop Lollipops with distinct patterns, bold colors, and texture. Using acrylic on panel, Cabrer paints with strong, dark lines and tropical colors, situating recognizable symbols in a white, raw space that sits on the flat surface of the panel. Cabrer engages with a conceptual approach to nostalgia of the 80s and 90s, repositioning popular culture and framing the memorabilia to be seen in new and unique ways. He sits within a line of contemporary greats, such as Andy Warhol of the Pop Art movement, using icons to reflect on social processes.

Prior to receiving his MFA from George Washington University, Cabrer sourced inspiration and exposed himself to a variety of different mediums and techniques through art he encountered while he traveled the globe. Working in his warehouse studio now in his Puerto Rican hometown, the artist has returned to his roots with echoes of culture, geography, and arts he internalizes throughout his retro pop work. In 2022, Eduardo’s solo booth at Aqua Art Miami sold out during Art Basel week; his work today is part of important private and public collections in the U.S and Puerto Rico
